Incident reportedly occurred last week, with Cairo's permission

An Israeli submarine openly crossed last week the Suez Canal en route to Iran in a show of force, Israel’s public broadcaster Kan reported on Monday.

Citing Arab intelligence sources, the report said the move was conducted with Egypt’s approval and in the midst of seething tensions between Jerusalem and Tehran.

The sources estimated that the vessel was heading toward the Persian Gulf, and by exposing itself above sea level it was sending a warning message to the Islamic Republic of Iran.

An Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson told Kan it does not respond to reports of this kind.

Tensions between Israel and Iran rose to new heights following the killing of a key Iranian scientist in the outskirts of Tehran in November.
