President Rivlin:
“In this time of serious internal strife, the Israeli people looks to you for inspiration and strength. Keeping the peace and maintaining routine security are true heroism.”

“I am proud to see here men and women, lions and lionesses, more religious and less religious, all in IDF uniform, all working side by side, all taking care of our security and the security of this land.”

President of Israel Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Tuesday 15 December / 29 Kislev, lit candles for the sixth night of Chanukah with soldiers from the Valleys Brigade, including from Battalion 47 Lions of the Valley and the Book of the Desert reconnaissance unit, who protect the Jordan valley border. The president was escorted by brigade commander Col. Bezalel Shneier and commander of the Lions of the Valley battalion Lt.-Col. Gilad Shriki, who briefed him on the operational activity of the battalions and the challenges of the sector.

On his way to the visit, the president stopped at the Metzukei Dragot roadblock and handed out doughnuts and the orange cake that Nechama ז"ל used to bake at Chanukah.

The president then carried on to light candles for the sixth night of Chanukah with the men and women of the Valleys Division at Metzukei Dragot, overlooking the Dead Sea. The president spoke with brigade commander Col. Bezalel Shneier about current challenges and heard from the soldiers deployed in the area about where they came from and their experience of service. The Book of the Desert reconnaissance unit comprises soldiers who operate as trackers in the Jordan Valley, some of whom with experience as shepherds on farms across the country. Battalion 47 is one of the units with male and female soldiers, deployed on the eastern border of the State of Israel and operational day and night with the local population to maintain stability and security.

“47 years ago, in the Yom Kippur War, I was an intelligence officer in the Jerusalem Brigade. When war broke out, the first thing they did was to send us to the Jordan valley,” the president said to the soldiers, speaking about his own connection to the sector. “Today, a great deal of your work is about maintaining our sensitive and strategic relations with the Kingdom of Jordan, formally our ally since 1994, and maintaining the fragile security cooperation between us and the Palestinians.”
The president added, “Your service is particularly complex. This is a time when we are called on to deal with both security and health challenges. It is important to remember, particularly today when the State of Israel is investing many resources in controlling the coronavirus pandemic, that there is also great importance on protecting our borders from external threats.”

The president said to the soldiers, ““I am proud to see here men and women, lions and lionesses, more religious and less religious, all in IDF uniform, all working side by side, all taking care of our security and the security of this land. Your partnership, your comradeship, the determination with which you perform your duty, are a huge source of Israeli pride and Israeli Hope.”

“In this time of serious internal strife, the Israeli people looks to you for inspiration and strength. Your daily operations against smugglers and infiltrators and preventing terrorism are essential. Your daily achievements and successes, along with keeping the peace and maintaining routine security, across the sector and over time, are true heroism. As is appropriate for Chanukah, we should recall the heroism of the Maccabees. For all this, you and your commanders deserve the respect and appreciation of us all,” said the president at the end of his remarks, wishing everyone a Chag Chanukah Sameach.
