The curfew is likely to begin on Wednesday and come into effect at around 6:00 pm


A day after the Israeli government approved a nightly curfew set for the Hanukkah holiday and through January 2, public health experts are warning that the measure may be ineffective in reducing the spread of COVID-19.

Ministers in Israel's so-called coronavirus cabinet approved the measure Monday evening as cases continue to spike across the country, with over 1,800 infections being recorded over the last 24 hours alone. 

“At the end of the day, we try to balance all of the considerations — health on the one hand and, on the other, the economy and people’s lifestyles,” Prof. Arnon Afek, a medical adviser to the government on the pandemic, told the Ynet news site.

While it makes sense for the government to try all options available at its disposal, ultimately a nightly curfew would be a measure implemented in vain, Afek said.
