Jerusalem, Israel - July 28, 2020 - The massive halls and galleries of the Israel Museum usually filled in the summer with tens of thousands of tourists are empty. Jerusalem's premier museum has been closed to the public due to COVID-19 restrictions. With overseas tourists still not arriving in Israel, the Israel Museum has not reopened since its closing Purim time. The outside lights which illuminated the buildings sitting on top of the hill near the Knesset Building have been turned off.

On Monday morning July 27, 2020, a small group of Israel Museum staff held a peaceful protest. Unlike other recent events, this was truly a peaceful protest. The small gathering stood on the sidewalk and did not block the busy street which runs between the Israel Museum and the Knesset. The protesters held up signs toward passing traffic. The only noisemakers were the drivers who passed honking their support to the protest.

At the beginning of March, the spring flowers were popping up in the valley below, as the Museum began a new exhibit on picture writing, hieroglyphics, and emojis which should have pleased the younger visitors in the summer.

During the Three Weeks and especially the Nine Days the Israel Museum was popular with the Model of the Second Temple Yerushalayim outside. Inside the airconditioned gallery a piece of the cornerstone of Beis Hamikdash on display attracted visitors every other year.

When asked to comment on the situation one long time museum volunteer responded to BJL: "I don’t think I should get involved between the Vaad of the workers and the administration of the museum, just looking forward to the IM opening soon."
