The strike will likely cause major disruptions and reduced services in hospitals across the country

Nurses across Israel went on strike Monday morning after last-effort talks with treasury officials broke down over staff shortages amid the coronavirus pandemic.   

The National Association of Nurses has complained for months that the lack of personnel and other resources has left them vulnerable to infection with more than "1,000 staff in quarantine and counting."

"It should be understood that the shortage of nurses did not start with the coronavirus [pandemic]," the association's chairperson Ilana Cohen told Israeli media after negotiations with Finance Ministry Director-General Keren Terner Eyal broke down overnight Sunday. 

The strike will likely cause major disruptions and reduced services in hospitals across the country, but Cohen said exceptions will be made for urgent cases and coronavirus patients.  Read more at i24
