Baltimore, MD - July 8, 2020 - Despite the uncertain times we are living in, the future revitalization of the Pikesville Armory remains a top priority. Like all levels of government, Baltimore County has experienced drops in revenues and increases in expenses caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nonetheless, we cannot afford to wait for better times to address the historic 14-acre Armory property and make it the future gem and gathering place of Pikesville. This site offers a viable opportunity to be the economic engine that drives the future long-term sustainability of the business community and neighborhoods of Pikesville.

The Maryland Military Department currently owns and maintains property. While the officials from the Military Department have said they are anxious to sell the property, the state must be committed to the process, engaged and remain a good neighbor. Additionally, the Military Department must work collaboratively with the local civic organizations to achieve a shared goal and vision.

Organizations such as 1000 Friends of Pikesville, the Pikesville-Owings Mills Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Pikesville Recreation Council, the Boys and Girls Club and the NCO Club have banded together to form Pikesville Partners.

This umbrella group has formed to see to the maintenance of the property and the planning and implementation of the vision adopted by the Governor’s Commission on the Future of the Pikesville Armory.

The vision determined that “As a historically significant site and unique community asset, the Pikesville Armory should be held in the public trust and utilized for the benefit and use by all segments of Pikesville’s diverse community. It is envisioned that the Pikesville Armory will be a multi-use venue for recreation, arts, and other community programming, as well as opportunities for revenue-generating development, interests, activities and programs, thereby becoming a cornerstone for the sustainable economic stabilization and revitalization of Pikesville.”

The Pikesville Partners group intends to raise sufficient funds to cover the maintenance of the property for at least three years, as well as hire a top-notch executive director or consultant to follow through on the implementation of the vision of the governor’s commission. With continued momentum, I am hopeful we will see work on the property start to begin within the aforementioned time frame.

I want to thank the community leaders for working collaboratively with local and state elected officials to step up to meet this moment and find an effective partner to help revitalize the Armory.

It is my pleasure to throw my full support behind the endeavors of the Pikesville Partners as we continue to work on this transformational vision and project.
