JERUSALEM (VINnews) — As Israel opens more public places and allows weddings with up to 250 people attending as of June 14, there has been a worrying spike in new cases of COVID-19 with 258 new cases diagnosed Tuesday from 14,371 tests conducted over the course of the day. At present there are 3,744 active cases in Israel, after 15,449 people recovered and 302 passed away. 39 people are in serious condition and 29 of them are under intubation.

The most cases were recorded in Tel Aviv (49) but a number of Bedouin and Arab towns also had significant numbers of cases, with the Negev Bedouin town of Ar’ara having 32 cases, the same as in Jerusalem. Bnei Brak had 31 new cases and the Arab town of Baka El-Gharbiya had 29 new cases.

In response to the rise in infections the corona cabinet will meet Wednesday at 17:30 for a further discussion of steps to be taken to prevent the spread of the virus. Finance Minister Yisrael Katz will demand an immediate opening of all cultural activities which have yet to be permitted, as well as a time frame fpr reopening of Israel Railways. Last week the cabinet halted the leniencies within the economy due to the rise in infections but allowed wedding halls to open with a restriction of 250 people and wearing masks.

The Knesset’s Law Committee extended Tuesday the enforcement regulations for corona offences for another 45 days after they expired Monday night and local authorities were unable to enforce violations on isolation, mask wearing and illegal large gatherings.
