ABU DHABI (VINnews) — A senior member of the United Arab Emirates government published an article in the Israeli press in Hebrew stating that an annexation by Israel of territories in Judea and Samaria could hinder the development of relations with the Arab world.

Yoseph Al Otaiba, a minister in the UAE and ambassador to Washington, warned that a “unilateral and calculated declaration of annexation constitutes an illegal takeover of Palestinian land. It belittles the Arab consensus- as well as the international consensus about the rights of Palestinians to self-determination. It will ignite violence and arouse the extremists. It will send ripple impacts around the region and in particular will affect Jordan, the Jordan from whose stability- sometimes taken for granted – the entire region and Israel in particular benefits.”

Al Otaiba described the significant benefits which could accrue to Israel if it continued normalization with the UAE : “They could create closer and more effective security cooperation. Since both countries have the most advanced and versatile economies in the region, broadening business and economic relations between them could promote growth and stability in the entire Middle East. Our common interest in matters like climate change, defense, food and water, technology and advanced science could spur more innovation and cooperation. Since the UAE is a center for international airlines, logistics, education, communication and culture, it could be an open gate connecting Israel to the region and the world.

Al Otaiba concluded that “in the UAE and in a large part of the Arab world we want to believe that Israel is an opportunity and not a foe. We are beset with too many mutual dangers and we see the great potential for warmer relations. A decision by Israel to annex will be an indelible sign regarding the question of whether Israel sees things the same way.”
