Israel police are running a secret surveillance program tracing Israelis’ vehicles, Walla reported Wednesday, citing a source in the law enforcement.

According to the newspaper, the police collect footage from smart surveillance cameras, capable of reading the license plates on the vehicles and determine if the car had been stolen or if the driver’s license could have expired.

The videos are stored in a massive database for at least half a year and potentially longer, the newspaper reports, to enable the police to trace the driver if the car becomes associated with a crime or a terrorist attack.
