Israeli Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman announced that he will step down from his post for a new cabinet position following weeks of criticism of his handling of the coronavirus crisis. The criticism reached its peak after Litzman allegedly violated the health ministry rules and prayed in an illicit minyan before contracting coronavirus. Litzman denied the allegations.

Litzman, head of the Chareidi UTJ party, will likely be moved over to the Housing and Construction portfolio following the formation of the next government, according to Israeli broadcaster Channel 12.

Litzman told Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Friday he would agree to switch portfolios as long as the Construction and Housing Ministry will include the powerful Israel Lands Authority. Litzman’s rabbi, Gerrer Rebbe Yaakov Aryeh Alter, told him the Construction portfolio was needed to help his constituency.

Although according to the coalition agreement signed between Blue-And-White and the Likud the health ministry belongs to the right-wing blod, Blue-And-White are demanding that a professional appointment be made to the health ministry in order to tackle the virus based on professional experience.

The party’s candidate would be Sheba Medical Center director-general Dr. Yitshak Kreiss who is a reserve brigadier general and was close to Blue and White leader Benny Gantz during their time in the IDF.
