JERUSALEM (VINnews) — More than 100 corona patients have been diagnosed in Israel, and tens of thousands have people have been quarantined. Yesterday the government issued a directive prohibiting gatherings of more than 100 people which has severely affected the wedding plans of many couples, with some of them postponing and even cancelling future events. Large minyanim are considering splitting into smaller groups to accommodate the government directive, while schools are waiving assemblies and other gatherings. However the government is not considering closing schools and educational institutions, although the spring semester may be delayed in colleges and universities.

The latest group sent to quarantine included an entire school from the town of Azur near Tel Aviv, after a 9-year-old pupil who had returned from Madrid was found to be infected with the corona virus. Due to his young age and the difficulty of quarantining such a young child without his parents, the child was not immediately placed in isolation until it became clear if his parents were also infected. The child is reportedly in good condition.

A prominent Israeli rabbi who recently returned from New York was also among those infected by the contagious virus. Rabbi Dov Singer is the head of the Makor Chayim Yeshiva High School in Gush Etzion, which numbers some 300 students. The school became famous in 2014 after 3 of its students were kidnapped and murdered by Hamas terrorists, an act which precipitated the Protective Edge campaign in Gaza. Rabbi Singer is also a Rosh Yeshiva in Tekoa and since he recently participated in a funeral with many other people, they will also be quarantined if necessary.
