Calm returned on Tuesday after a two-day flare-up between Israel and Palestinian Islamic Jihad that raised fears of an escalation a week before Israel’s general election.

After two days of intense fighting, which saw over 80 rockets and mortar shells launched from Gaza into Israel’s south, a ceasefire seems to have been upheld. A majority of the projectiles were intercepted by Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system.

Road and rail routes were reopened in southern Israel, but around 65,000 students remained off school.
