President Reuven (Ruvi) Rivlin today, Sunday 2 February / 7 Shevat, welcomed soldiers who volunteer on IDF bases across the country, some of whom have special needs. Brig Gen Amir Vadmani, head of the Planning and Research Department of the IDF Manpower Directorate and Col Nimrod Arzuan, commander of the IDF’s Meitav enlistment unit and some 20 volunteer soldiers also participated in the event. The soldiers began their journey with organizations that support young people during enlistment to the IDF. This is a critical stage in preparing the young people, some of whom have special needs, for independent employment and full integration into the community and society in the future.
The meeting was opened by Liran Natan who is 24 years old and has cerebral palsy. Around a year ago, she began to volunteer on the Sar-El program and enlisted as a regular soldier last March. Today, she serves on the Palmachim base in an air defense warehouse. Liran, who came to the IDF through the ‘Lend a Hand to a Special Child’ organization and was part of the ‘Great in Uniform’ program, said, “I have will power and I do not give up on myself. I went, I fell over a lot, but in the end I succeeded. Two years ago, I joined the ‘Great in Uniform’ program. Every morning I wake up with great pride, put on my uniform and travel to Palmachim.”
The president thanked the amazing young people for sharing their stories and told them of his excitement at welcoming them to Beit HaNasi. “I listened carefully to the moving words. I know that every one of you has a story of facing challenges, but the main thing is that you got over them You are all heroes, and I salute you.”
The president added, “the big difficulty facing people with disabilities isn’t necessarily dealing with the disability itself. Often, it is dealing with society. The fact that the IDF is open gives hope for Israeli society as a whole. In recent years, there is much talk of lack of motivation to enlist. Your strong desire to contribute to the IDF and the State of Israel is not to be taken for granted. There are those among you who fought for years to join up. Your determination, your motivation, your willpower – are truly inspiring.”
The president thanked the commanders, saying, “you are doing sacred work, and we thank you. You lead all the young people here to perform vital tasks for the IDF and for society as a whole. Like all our young people, they are also children of God. God has no step-children.” At the end of his remarks, the president also thanked the soldiers’ parents, saying, “it is not only you that benefit from joining the IDF. We all benefit, the IDF benefits, and Israeli society benefits enormously. You are the best!”
