Prosecution reportedly unimpressed by 'new evidence' touted by Netanyahu attorneys

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s defense team failed to make Israel's attorney general reconsider the charges in the most serious of the criminal cases faced by the Likud leader, Israeli TV reported on Saturday.

The so-called case 4000 alleges that Netanyahu bestowed regulatory favors on Israel’s leading telecommunications company, Bezeq Telecom Israel, in return for positive coverage of him and his wife Sara on Walla! News, a website controlled by Shaul Elovitch, the company’s former chairman and the controlling shareholder.

Following an 11-hour hearing last week, Netanyahu's attorneys said they presented "new evidence" which they asserted “completely contradict the claims in the charge sheet” in case 4000; however state prosecutors later told Channel 12 that they were not surprised by the fresh arguments.

The latest report by the same outlet cites unnamed officials familiar with the matter.

The hearings are set to resume on Sunday.
