After meeting the head of the Likud party and his arch-nemesis Benny Gantz, the leader of the Blue and White bloc, the Israeli President Reuven Rivlin has given the Prime Minister's mandate to Benjamin Netanyahu.

Now, the incumbent Prime Minister who has the backing of 55 Knesset members -- six seats short of a parliamentary majority margin -- is to try and form a coalition government after a deadlocked vote.

Rivlin is reportedly expected to tap Netanyahu to form a government if unity talks with Gantz do not materialize, according to Israeli media.
