Jerusalem, Israel, May 7, 2019 - Yom Hazikaron, Remembrance Day for the Fallen of Israel's Wars and Victims of Terrorism, will begin at sunset on Tuesday evening. All Wednesday, throughout Israel, at military cemeteries and graves, tens of thousands of people will visit to pay respects. Some come for family members, others to say tehillim at a grave, so none are forgotten. Special official ceremonies will be led throughout the day by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin
As the sun sets, the mood will shift as Israel celebrates its 71st Independence Day. The official televised ceremony is held on Har Herzl, near the grave of Theodore Herzl, with President of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein lighting the first memorial torch and delivering an inspirational speech. However, the opening is with a Yizkor prayer and message.
There will be 12 memorial torches, one for each tribe of Israel, lit by 16 honorees, each making a short comment. Along with Israelis who have overcome difficult challenges, on the theme "Because of the Spirit," will be American, Jeff Finkelstein, President of Pittsburgh Federation, who is representing Diaspora Jewry. BJL was present for the dress rehearsal, and recorded Finkelstein who said in his speech, delivered in Hebrew, "we are all brothers."
The event is produced under the offices of MK Miri Regev, the Israeli Minister for Culture and Sport, who like Edelstein and torch lighters were present for the dress rehearsal.
The tickets are hard to obtain, numerous young people were near the entrance trying to find an extra. Once inside the vast space, on the large viewing stands, one saw dress uniforms of Israel Defense Forces, Police and Fire and marching honor guards with flags. A menorah and magen David were two of their formations. Guests were taking selfies, using souvenir flashlights, and waving small flags. The evening ended with a fireworks display. Prior to the program, an announcer told the crowd what to do in case of an emergency siren. It was, besides the loud music and fireworks, a quiet and cool night on the Jerusalem mountain top.
One highlight of the musical entertainment was the Shalva Band's performance. Because of sefira, at this time BJL is providing only a photo essay preview of an annual Israeli popular event.
