Baltimore, MD - Jan. 4, 2019 - On December 25, Agra D’Pirka participants in Baltimore, Flatbush, Lakewood, Miami Beach, Monsey, and Queens enjoyed shiurim given by leading local Talmidei Chachomim in their respective cities. The popular Monday-Thursday morning nationwide Kollel learning program which includes a light breakfast, was founded nine years ago by R’ Ezra Klein of Brooklyn l’ilui neshmas his mother, Pesi Rochel Klein, a'h (whose initials spell out “Pirka”), on her first yahrtzeit. This Legal Holiday Program was dedicated l’zecher nishmas R’ Ezra’s father, Avraham Elazar ben Yisrael Yehuda, z'l, whose first yahrtzeit was on December 25th- 18 Teves.
In Baltimore, the newest of the Agra D’Pirka locales, Rav Tzvi Mordechai Feldheim, shlit”a, Rosh Mesivta, Kesser Torah, (above) opened his shiur at Khal Ahavas Yisroel Tzemach Tzedek (KYATT), with the question: Why do we have to say 'Chazak! Chazak! V'nischazek!’ —that we should be strengthened when we finish Bereishis?” Quoting from the Sefer Yitzera, he then discussed the fact that we often finish something enthusiastically and then our enthusiasm abates and we want to rest on our laurels.
Rav Aharon Kahn, shlit”a, Mora D’Asra, Knesses Bais Avigdor, discussed the significance of Kol Nidre, while contrasting our notion of nedarim with the secular “New Year’s resolutions”, with Flatbush participants. He proposed a possible connection between nedarim and Yom Kippur. It was followed by a shiur given by the Mashgiach of Mirrer Yeshiva- Brooklyn, Rav Esriel Erlanger, shlit”a, who explored the “mystery” of the formation of Bnai Yisrael. The Rav noted that besides the narrative of the Jewish people’s suffering in Mitzrayim, very little is revealed to us about their lives. Even Moshe Rabbeinu’s life, during the sixty years after he left Mitzrayim until the sneh, is shrouded in mystery. Rav Erlanger next quoted the Midrash Shir Hashirim, which credits the Bnai Yisrael with keeping the secret that they would be leaving with the spoils from Mitzrayim, never to return. This is similar to the way that Lot kept the secret that Avraham and Sarah were husband and wife, for which he was rewarded. The Maharal sets forth that geula always comes from a hidden shoresh. Thus, the secretiveness to which they collectively subscribed was all part of the redemption process.
Rav Yaakov Gross, shlit”a, Rosh Kollel, Miami Beach Community Kollel, addressed the Miami Beach participants at the Community Kollel, about the latest controversy taking place in New York--the issue of secular studies. He went through a range of sugyos discussing the idea of chochma yevanis. He went through a teshuva from the rivash in siman 55. He ended the shiur with the famous Reb Baruch Ber in kiddushin which talks about the two types of bitul Torah. Subsequently, Rav Ephraim Shapiro, shlit”a, Mora D’Asra, Congregation Shaaray Tefilah, spoke about the centrality of kedusha in the weeks of Shovavim. Pharaoh’s plan was to keep B’nai Yisrael too busy to think about geulah. Today’s yetzer hara, in the guise of technology, operates much the same way – keeping us too busy to think about truly important things.

At the Fountainview Shul in Monsey, popular Agra D’Pirka maggid shiur, Rav Yisroel Ephrati, shlit”a, (above) captivated his audience speaking about 'Im lo' 'achshav 'ei matai, in halacha and agadah. He discussed living for now and not thinking about the present or worrying about the future. Citing various opinions in the Rishonim regarding the concept of not waiting to do a mitzvah for a better situation even if it will be more Mehudar, he concluded you never know if you will be ableto do it at a later time. Other lessons conveyed in his shiur included: Our tachlis is NOW; and, we are judged on what we did today, not what we could have done yesterday or tomorrow.
At Khal Zichron Yaakov, in Lakewood, Rav Gershon Ribner, shlit”a, Rosh Yeshiva, Yeshivas Nesivos Hatorah, covered two topics: “Denying One’s Jewishness”, and Geirushin. In Queens, Rav Noach Oelbaum, shlit”a, Mara D’Asra, Khal Nachlas Yitzchak discussed “Inyanei D’Yuma”. Additional shiurim were available at Agra D’Pirka’s Boro Park and Williamsburg locations.
Baltimore Agra D’Pirka participant, Marc Ward, perhaps, sums up the sentiments of the program’s participants, nationwide. “It was very inspiring, filled with inspirational stories, Chazal, and discreet mussar… I always look forward to taking advantage of this learning program on my days off.”
