The High Court of Justice has granted a three-month extension on a deadline it had set for passing a new IDF draft law for Yeshiva Bochrim.

Last month, the state submitted a petition to the High Court asking to postpone the implementation of the ruling on the draft law and allow it to complete the legislative process until the end of the Knesset’s winter session. The extension is shorter than the government’s request for nine months.

“After considering this matter, we decided to partially respond to the request and postpone the date… so that it will take effect on December 2, 2018,” the court says in its ruling.

That date (Erev Chanukah) coincides with the first Yartzheit of Maran Hagaon HaRav Aron Leib Shteinman ZATZAL.

The court ruling, which forces the government to tackle the politically destabilizing issue immediately after the Knesset returns from its summer recess in October, may increase the chances that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s coalition will go to early elections in the fall.

As YWN reported, Agudas Yisrael MKs had threatened to leave the coalition if the deadline was not extended, with Deputy Ministers Meir Porush and Yaakov Litzman leaving their positions in the government ministries.
