Jerusalem - Multiple youths are feared dead after their yeshiva school bus was carried off by a surge in the Tzapit river, amid intense storms in southern Israel on Thursday.

Thirteen of the students on board were found by search and rescue teams and nine are still missing. Police officers and IDF helicopters are currently aiding in the search for the missing youth. The diving unit of the Fire Brigade is on location and rescue teams are using boats to locate the missing youth.

A total of seven victims are confirmed dead, according to Israeli media outlets.

Magen David Adom CEO Eli Bean stated in an interview with Israeli radio station 103FM that the rescue teams are “racing against the clock to save lives.”

He stated that seven of the found students are in critical condition and four are moderately wounded, all were taken to the Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba.

The Tamar Regional Council requested members of the public to refrain from visiting the area at this time due to the extreme weather conditions. 

Highway 90 is now blocked in both directions between the Arava junction and the Eilat entry road block. The spokeswoman for the city of Eilat, Dana Zanti, stated that a ceiling had collapsed in the Isrotel Red Sea hotel.

On Wednesday, two youths were killed when they were swept away in the sudden floods created by the spring storm that raged in various parts of the country. The storm caused the traffic in Gush Dan to halt, various power outages and damage to cars and private property. Read more at JPost
