Baltimore, MD - March 21, 2018 - The chances you will get a ticket for speeding or running a red light in the city just increased. A total of 42 new red-light and speed cameras went up Monday at locations throughout the city, and if you're caught on camera, you could pay a pretty penny.
Nineteen speed cameras have been added to locations outside schools within the city. If you get caught, prepare to pay a $40 fine. Nineteen more red-light cameras are also up on city streets. Running a red light will cost you $75.
Also, six cameras are dedicated to ticketing trucks for driving on streets that restrict vehicles over three-quarters of a ton.
"The idea is to keep heavy vehicles off the street to give the residents peace and peace of mind with the shaking and the noise from the trucks, plus damage to the infrastructure," said Robert Liberati, director of the Automated Traffic Violation Enforcement System.
The red-light cameras run 24 hours a day, every day of the year. The speed cameras operate Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. year-round. Since the program returned last summer, DOT said there have been few problems with the system.
"We're double checking everything. One of the biggest changes in this program and the prior program (is that) every violation is looked at twice, once by DOT and once by the Baltimore police when they sign off on the violation," Liberati said.
The Department of Transportation said it has had a large number of requests from the community asking for cameras. It appears they are working to slow down cars in school zones and keep people from running red lights.
"With the cameras, there is consistent enforcement, so everybody knows on this street, at this location and this school and intersection, at this truck route, there a chance you're going to get a ticket for speeding or running a light or driving a truck where you're not supposed to," Liberati said.

Automated Red Light Enforcement Cameras
The red light camera monitoring system consists of stationary cameras that use sensors working in conjunction with traffic control signals to record images of vehicles entering an intersection during a red light signal phase. Photos and videos are taken from the rear of the vehicle with the red light signal visible, both before the vehicle enters the intersection and while traveling through it. The red light enforcement cameras are operational 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and the fine is $75.00.
