Jerusalem, Israel - Sept. 25, 2024 - Soon it will be a year since October 7, 2023, changed our world.
To mark one year, Stand With Us is hosting an exhibition to reflect and pay respect to the lives lost. The exhibition, "Faces of October 7", features a unique art display of the victims of October 7 in the StandWithUs Katz Education Center on King David Street, Jerusalem, Israel, across from the King David Hotel. The exhibition is to run from September 24 – October 30, 2024.
The official launch was held on Tuesday evening, an opportunity for BJL to view the powerful images and meet the artist. The portraits were created by talented Israeli graffiti artist Benzi Brofman, who survived the Nova Festival. The images document and perpetuate the memory of the hostages, the murdered, and IDF fallen soldiers. The portraits were created with the permission of and in collaboration with the families and several of the families were present and spoke of their loved ones lost.
Michael Dickson, Executive Director of StandWithUs, noted that now while "all eyes are on the north, our hearts are still in Gaza."
The faces on display are witness to those who deny October 7 did not happen. The loss of one person is as if an entire world is lost. The art in the room humanizes the victims. One can see kindness in the eyes and smiles, almost life-like in the quality of the drawings.
A video message from Israeli President Isaac Herzog opened the program. The speeches by Fleur Hassan Nahoum, Eitan Neishlos, and the fathers of hostage Guy Gilboa-Dalah, of murdered Shani Louk, and fallen soldier Reef Harush and Brofman the artist added to the emotional impact of the evening.
Important to note, that the entire young Siman Tov family was murdered on October 7. The Bibas family was taken hostage. Almost a year later there has been no word as to the fate of the parents or two red-haired babies taken captive to Gaza.
Shany Lousky-Levy StandWithUs Chief of Staff and Noah Shufitinsky educational outreach manager, provided English and Hebrew narration acting as Masters of Ceremony.
It is a temporary exhibition with limited spaces per session. Reservations are required to avoid overcrowding. Slots will fill up quickly.
While the evening began with smiles and greetings with friends, the evening closed with somber expressions and tears, remembering the loss of life in the past year and how it has affected everyone.
May the memories of those we lost on October 7 and since be a blessing, and may all the hostages be returned safely and soon.
The photo essay includes guests at the opening event, images from the Visitor Center display, musicians, and screenshots from the video presentations.
