Jerusalem, Israel - July 20, 2023 - Every summer, thousands of Tanakh teachers and Chumash study enthusiasts gather at Herzog College for four packed days filled with shiurim by the world’s leading Tanakh lecturers.

The Yemei Iyun is in its 32nd year and has included English shiurim for the past 15 years. Almost 4000 people attended in person this year, with evening events added in Jerusalem and Modiin for the first time. Over the four days in Alon Shvut, there were 125 lectures, including 25 in English, plus 12 more in the evening programs. Figuring out a schedule for which class to attend is an annual challenge.

This year, on the fourth day of the Yemei Iyun event, a new Jewish Educators’ Day focused on the challenges facing today’s Judaic Studies teachers in schools, yeshivas, and seminaries.

How can we make Bible study exciting for kids in Jewish schools, and show them that it is still relevant to their daily lives?

This was the important question that was discussed at the Herzog College Yemei Iyun B’Tanakh. at the Jewish Educators’ Day for English-speaking teachers.

The workshops discussed how to understand the emotional and intellectual needs of today’s students, and how to empower them to learn Tanakh. How to use new online sources to empower students was demonstrated.

In the last session in the afternoon, Herzog Global launched their new story-telling curriculum for community schools – “Tanakh Is Our Story” - which takes a novel approach to exploring themes of Jewish identity through Biblical stories.

Organized by Herzog Global and UnitED in conjunction with Yeshiva University's Azrieli Graduate School and the Lookstein Center at Bar-Ilan University, fifteen participants came from overseas to study with the Jewish Educators' Day.

Among those coming from the U.S. to participate were Rabbi Yehuda Chanales from Teaneck, NJ, and Rabbi Shmuel Feld from Silver Spring, MD. The event was co-sponsored by UnitED – the Israeli-government-funded network for developing and empowering Jewish educators all over the world.
