Jerusalem, Israel - Nov. 16, 2019 - Situated with an impressive view of the Jerusalem Forest is ALYN, Israel’s only pediatric rehabilitation hospital.  Every day, ALYN services 300 children with various disabilities, while teaching parents how to administer their child's required, often life-saving, treatments.

For the 20th year in a row, international cyclists have participated in a charity bike ride called "The Wheels of Love."  Five hundred participants, coming from twelve countries, raised over $2.5 million. A Dutch team had 14 members, some returning riders to the Wheels of Love Ride. There were many first-time participants this year, including Olympic Gold Medalist Carina Benninga.

Besides extensive physical and medical rehabilitation therapies, ALYN's Innovation Space seeks to find unique solutions to physical limitations, such as Uriel's tefillin. Treatment for cancer as a young child left Uriel with limitations in his arm movement. After bar mitzvah, Uriel wanted to be able to put on his own tefillin and kippah. Workers in the well-equipped Innovation Space were able to craft a special devices to make Uriel's wish a reality.

On Thursday afternoon, with music blasting, the road to ALYN hospital was closed to traffic. At the school across the street small children were waving paper streamers, as were the families and supporters of the cyclists ready to enter with a police escort.

Over five days, the cyclists traveled routes of various difficulties, from northern Israel down toward ALYN.  All the riders wait to enter as a group, many tired from the last ride up the Jerusalem hills. However, a feature of the Wheels of Love Bike Ride is that medals to participants are presented by ALYN patients. The smiles, along with a few happy tears, add to the end of race emotions.

Baltimore native Yaki Tenebaum told BJL, "After much deliberation, I decided to participate in the Alyn Wheels of Love ride for my first time this year. It was extremely inspiring to not only contribute to an organization that provides such life-changing services for so many but also to ride alongside patients themselves, past and current, who are constantly faced with new obstacles and manage to find a way to prevail each time. I am already looking forward to future opportunities to support the ALYN Hospital."

Already planning for next year, it was announced that the 2020 ALYN Wheels of Love Ride will take place from October 25-29th, 2020 in the South of Israel.
