For the fourth year, President Reuven Rivlin  hosted a joint learning program in Beit Hanasi  prior to Tisha B'Av.  The event, entitled "Remember what we had ... ," was a collective study of kinnot, held in cooperation with the Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI).

Speakers included former Jewish Agency Chairman Natan Sharansky, incoming Jewish Agency Chairman Isaac (Buji) Herzog, and the CEO of the JPPI, Avinoam Bar-Yosef.

The first study session was delivered by Rabbi Yaakov Medan, Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva Har Etzion, followed by Head of Bible Department of Hebrew University Prof. Nili Esani ,  Rabbi Dubi Hayon, and  Talia Avnun  Benevisti.

Included on the source sheets  were charts prepared for JPPI by Shmuel Rosner, in an article called "Tisha B'Av How Do Israelis Grieve?"  He found that more than 200,000 Jews visit the Kotel on Tisha B’Av, mourning and remembering the destruction of both the First and Second Temples and other tragedies in Jewish History. All night, crowds fill the Kotel Plaza, with many sitting or lying on the stones.

A third of the Israelis surveyed responded that they fasted on Tisha B'Av.  The report also states, "Thirty-one percent of Jews observe the religious tradition of not wearing leather on Tisha B`av and most of those who observe the fast also wear canvas shoes."

In his opening remarks President Rivlin said, "

The whole of Eicha reminds us of the past, examining our sins, reminding us of the extent of the destruction. But it does not end there; it also expects us to choose differently next time, do differently next time, be different, so there will be no next time... It is our responsibility to create hope - we have to look always further, beyond lamenting the past, beyond the disputes and hatred, to benefit the generation of our children. We must do everything for them and the country to be better...

We came here to speak and we must continue to talk, to find solutions, find creative ways to honor the rest of us, our history and Jewish heritage. "
