Jerusalem, Israel - June 5, 2018 - Israel President Reuven Rivlin, on Monday, June 4, hosted a delegation of youth winners of the World Championship Robotics Competition FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) at Beit Hanasi, in Jerusalem, Israel. 

FIRST is an international non-profit organization founded with the goal to develop the curiosity and motivation of children and youth in the areas of engineering and technology. World Championships were held in April in Houston. 

In Israel, there are 1200 teams, throughout the country, from nursery age through seniors in high school. The city of Dimona has 102 chapter teams. 

Four groups were represented at the meeting for their extraordinary achievements: Hod Hasharon, winners of the first World Championship in the history of FIRST Israel; Dimona, was chosen as one of three finalists in the world; Misgav, champions at the World Championships;and Haifa, winning for 'inspiration'. Student participants mentioned how the groups become connected to their projects, and learn to work in teams, becoming friends who put community first. 

During the meeting, students demonstrated the project of the Misgav Miskar group from the robotics competition, programmed and built by themselves. They also told the President about the construction process and demonstrated its capabilities.

 

President Rivlin told the student representatives, "You all deserve praise and admiration for your hard work, persistence, investment, and of course the impressive achievements." The president added: "Science, research and technological development, are the spearhead of the State of Israel. The benefits of science are the decisive factor that makes the State of Israel. It is not possible to imagine our country without a scientific community developed and advanced."

At the end of the meeting, the president wished the participants continued success and said he was proud of them and of their achievements, before posing for group photos. 

Also present were FIRST Israel Chairman, Avihu Ben-Nun, CEO FIRST Israel, and board member of the Technion Ya'arit Levy, and Prof. Alon Wolf.
