Denuclearization Successes Around The World
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Will North Korea give up the bomb? The answer may start becoming clear when South Korean President Moon Jae-in meets North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday. While North Korea declared this past weekend it would stop nuclear and intercontinental ballistic missile tests and shut down its nuclear test site, it did not indicate it will give up its nuclear arsenal or halt its production of missiles. Moon and later President Donald Trump are still likely to find it very difficult to persuade Kim to dismantle his entire arsenal, which includes purported thermonuclear weapons and developmental ICBMs. But other countries that developed or tried to develop nuclear weapons have agreed to abandon them in exchange for sanctions relief and compensation. None of thes...

S.Korea Says Has Halted Propaganda Broadcasts At Border With North
* First time in more than 2 yrs for halt to broadcasts * Preparations underway for Moon-Kim summit on Friday (Adds quotes from defence ministry, more detail, background) SEOUL, April 23 (Reuters) - South Korea halted the propaganda broadcasts it blares across the border at North Korea on Monday to create a peaceful atmosphere ahead of the first inter-Korean summit in a decade this Friday, the defence ministry said. North Korea has its own propaganda broadcasts at the border, but a defence ministry official said he could not verify whether the North had stopped its broadcasts. In February, the North lowered the volume of its border propaganda after the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in South Korea’s Pyeongchang. “We hope this decision will lead both Koreas to stop mutual cr...

Hate Crimes Unit Called In After Chasidic Man Attacked By Man Spewing Death Threats In Crown Heights
Brooklyn, NY - A midday attack that left a 52 year old Chasidic Crown Heights man bleeding and gasping for breath is being investigated by the NYPD as a hate crime. Menachem Moskowitz told VIN News that he was on his way home from Shabbos morning davening at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center when he said hello to a man that he passed at the corner of Schenectady and Rutland avenues who began an angry tirade against him. “He said, ‘why are you saying hello to me, you fake Jew,’” Moskowitz told VIN News. The man continued the angry barrage of words, telling Moskowitz not to talk to him. “He said ‘I hate Jews.  You stole my mortgage, you stole my house.’ He kept on ranting so I just went down the block.” Moments later Moskowitz said he ...

Iran, Israel Play Down Prospects They'll Go To War Over Syria
Jerusalem - Iran and Israel traded blame on Sunday for an unprecedented, weeks-long surge in hostilities between their forces over Syria but played down prospects of a spillover into war. A showdown between the arch-foes has loomed since Feb. 10, when Israel said an armed Iranian drone launched from a Syrian base penetrated its territory. Israel downed the drone and, during a reprisal raid, lost an F-16 jet to Syrian ground fire. On April 9, an air strike killed seven Iranian Revolutionary Guards Corps members at the Syrian base. Tehran blamed Israel and vowed unspecified retaliation, drawing Israeli counter-threats to broaden attacks on Iranian military assets in Syria. Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a U.S. television interview that further Israeli sorties in S...

BaltimoreJewishLife.com (BJL) is proud to partner with STAR-K CERTIFICATION that realizes that there is no substitute for a person’s own Rav. In an effort to offer a possible solution, it has launched its Institute of Halachah as a public service. Over the years, the agency’s Kashrus Hotline has answered generic halachic questions from kosher consumers the world over, including inquiries regarding the kosher status of foods and certified Sabbath mode appliances. The formation of a separate official division within STAR-K testifies to the need for addressing these issues.

The Institute of Halachah is directed by HaRav Mordechai Frankel, under the guidance of HaRav Moshe Heinemann, STAR-K’s Rabbinic Administrator. It is an invaluable resource for a diverse array of rabbis to discuss general halachic matters, as well as gain access to source materials for shiurim and answers to congregants’ questions.

Steyer's Talk Of Impeaching Trump Not Appealing To Dems
ATLANTA (AP) — Tom Steyer is on a multimillion-dollar mission to impeach Donald Trump, but Democrats whose campaigns the California billionaire is helping bankroll aren't keen to follow his lead. Steyer, whose appeals you may have seen on TV, is spending $40 million on his "Need To Impeach" roadshow, with advertising and town halls around the country. But Democratic leaders in Congress and many candidates hoping to wrest House control from the Republicans shun the prospect of showy impeachment proceedings. Instead, they're counting on pocketbook issues and a growing voter interest in checks on the GOP government in Washington. The tightrope balance for Democrats underscores their dilemma. The question is how to maximize liberal anger against the president, who is under th...

Turkish Opposition Leader Says Erdogan Will Lose At Polls
ISTANBUL, Turkey (AP) — The leader of Turkey's main opposition party predicted Saturday that voters who backed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the past would "side with democracy" instead of a "dictatorship" during the next elections in June. Republican People's Party leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu said he is confident of ousting Erdogan from office by winning the snap parliamentary and presidential elections "with at least 60 percent of votes" even though the party lagged in past votes. But the 69-year-old politician's optimism has weak spots. Though Kilicdaroglu says the pro-secular party, known as CHP, wasn't "surprised" by this week's announcement of early elections and ready to compete, it has yet to put forward a presidential candidate, a campaign plan o...

Hilchos Chanukah

During the Second Temple, the Greek empire reigned (over Israel),1  and they (the Greeks) passed decrees against the Jews and (tried) to erase their religion,  and did not allow them to carry out Torah (study) or the commandments.  They put their hands on their property and their daughters.  They entered the Temple, destroyed and made the pure unclean.  The Jews were in great distress because of them and were much oppressed, until the G-d of their fathers had mercy on them, delivering them from their hands and saving them.  Then overcame, the sons of the Hasmonean High Priest, (the Greeks) and killed them  and saved the Jews from their hands.  They appointed a king from the Priests,  and the kingdom of Israel was restored  for more than 200 years until the destruction of (the) second (Temple).  When the Jews overcame their enemies and destroyed them,  it was the 25th of Kislev2  when they entered the Sanctuary (inner room) and did not find pure (olive) oil in the Temple,  except one jar sealed with seal of the High Priest,  and it did not contain enough to light except for one day only.  But they lit from it the lamps of the Menorah3 for eight days,  until they could crush olives and produce a (new quantity) of pure oil.  For these reasons, decreed the Sages of that generation  that these eight days  that begin on the 25th Kislev, will be days of joy and praise.  One lights on them lamps at evening at the entrance to the houses,  every evening of the eight nights to show off and demonstrate the miracle.  These days are called ''Hanukah''  that is to say ''they rested'' (chanu) on the ''25'' ('th of the month)  because on the 25th they rested from their enemies.  and also because of those days  they (re)-dedicated the house (Temple) which their foes had defiled.  Also some say that it is a commandment to increase slightly the festive meals on Hanukah.  Another reason is because the work of (building) the Sanctuary (in the desert) was completed in these days.  One should tell one's children the story of the miracles  that were done for our fore-fathers in those days,  (see Josephus)  However, these meals are not considered as part of the commandment  unless one says at the meal songs of praise.  One should increase charity in these Hanukah days,  for this can help mend any defects in our souls.  This charity, should be given particularly to poor Torah scholars. (KSA 139:1)
1) 352 BCE until 70 CE
2) 139 BCE
3) The Menorah was made of gold and had seven branches.

BaHaB Begins Monday; What Is It?
BaHaB is observed on the Monday, Thursday, and Monday after the Shabbos after the Rosh Chodesh after Pesach.  It is also observed after Sukkos following the same formula.  The word BaHaB is an acronym of letters where the Gematria is 2,5,2 referring to the second day of the week, the fifth day of the week, and the second day of the week again.  It is not observed, for some reason, after Shavuos. Many people not only recite Selichos during these three days, but they also fast.  The reason why it is the Monday following the Shabbos after the Rosh Chodesh after the holiday is to give the shul an opportunity to “Bentch BaHaB” – to bless those people that will be observing this custom.  It is done the previous Shabbos by the Chazan after the...

Sheriff: Waffle House Shooting Suspect's Firearms Card Was Revoked
A sheriff in Illinois says Travis Reinking's state firearms card was revoked last year by state police, but his guns were given to his father with the promise that they wouldn't be shared with his son. Police in Tennessee are searching for the 29-year-old Reinking, saying he's suspected of fatally shooting four people at a Nashville restaurant early Sunday. The Metro Nashville Police Department says arrest warrants charging Reinking with murder have been issued. Police say Reinking was from Morton, Illinois, but moved to Nashville in 2017. Sheriff Robert Huston in Tazewell County, Illinois, says his department has "no information" on how Reinking got the weapons again. Huston says Reinking's father has a valid firearm ownership card, and his officers didn't belie...

Maryland National Guard Distributes Drug Disposal Pouches
Aberdeen, MD - A new tool is making it easier to safely dispose of unwanted prescription drugs. More than 90,000 disposal pouches are being distributed statewide by the Maryland National Guard. Officials hope the pouches will help keep prescription drugs off the streets. The pouches can be used as a safe alternative to discarding medication at takeback events or searching for turn-in boxes. "As a medical professional myself, I find it's important that we work together to find as many alternatives to get the opioids off of the streets, and this is one additional way to do so," said Lt. Col. Jody Brown, commander of the Kirk Army Medical Clinic. When prescription drugs are put in the pouch, water is added to the powder in the bag, and the resulting mixture neutralizes the drugs, mak...

Merkel Denounces Arab Immigrants' Anti-Semitism
German Chancellor, who maintained open-door immigration policy for Syrian refugees, condemns 'new anti-Semitism' from Arab migrants. German Chancellor Angela Merkel condemned the rise of anti-Semitism in Germany, brought on to a large extent by the immigration of large numbers of Arab migrants and refugees from Syria. Speaking with Israel’s Channel 10 on Sunday, Merkel dubbed the wave of anti-Jewish sentiment “another form of anti-Semitism”, distinguishing it from the anti-Semitism of fringe nationalist groups. "We have a new phenomenon, as we have many refugees among whom there are, for example, people of Arab origin who bring another form of anti-Semitism into the country," Merkel said. Merkel spoke just days after Syrian immigrants assaul...

Official: Shotgun In Guitar Case Was Used In School Shooting
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A gunman carried a shotgun in a guitar case and opened fire Friday in a Florida high school, wounding one student before he was arrested on a day planned for a national classroom walkout to protest gun violence, authorities said. Nineteen-year-old suspect Sky Bouche said "Sorry," followed by "It doesn't matter anyway" to reporters as he was led from the school in handcuffs by several deputies. It happened at Forest High School, which was put on lockdown. A 17-year-old boy was taken to a local hospital for treatment of a non-life threatening wound to his ankle. Some students and teachers piled desks and filing cabinets against classroom doors as a makeshift barricade. Police initially said Bouche was a student at the school, but later said he was ...

Report: Ivanka, Kushner, Mnuchin To Attend Jerusalem Embassy Opening
Treasury Sec. Mnuchin to lead massive delegation at opening for US embassy in J'lem, joined by dozens of lawmakers. Some 250 people will join a US delegation to Israel’s capital for the opening of the new embassy in Jerusalem next month, Axios reported on Sunday, including dozens of lawmakers, senior advisers to President Donald Trump, and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin. According to Axios, Mnuchin will lead the American delegation to Jerusalem, where the US is slated to open its new embassy on May 14th, coinciding with Israel’s 70th Independence Day. Among the other roughly 250 members of the delegation will be some 40 senators and members of the House of Representatives, as well as American Jewish leaders. President Donald Trump’s son-in-law...

Three Belgian Companies Summoned to Court for Chemicals Exports To Syria
Three Belgian companies are being brought to court by the Belgian Customs for exporting chemicals to Syria — including one that could be used in the production of sarin nerve gas. Isopropanol also known as rubbing alcohol is found in disinfectants and paint varnishes but can also be used to make sarin, which Western countries say was used by the Syrian government in a chemical attack against Syrian people in April 2017. Antwerp Criminal Court set a trial date for May 15 for three companies — Belgian chemical group AAE Chemie and two handling agents, Danmar Logistics and Anex Customs — Roland Cassiers, a spokesman for the court, told Euronews. “After investigating the matter, Belgium’s federal customs administration believes that the export of various ...

Iranian Foreign Minister Wants 'Respect' From US
WASHINGTON (AP) — Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif accused the U.S. government of arrogance and belligerence, saying that Washington needed "a change in attitude" before any meaningful negotiations can begin over several U.S. citizens being held prisoner in Iran. "It is important... for the (Trump) administration to show the ability to engage in a respectful dialogue," Zarif said. "The United States needs to learn how to treat other sovereign nations, particularly sovereign nations who do not depend on the United States for continued existence." Zarif spoke to CBS' Face the Nation on Friday; the full interview will be broadcast Sunday and portions of the transcript were made available to The Associated Press. At least five Iranians, all dual-American citizens or ...

Man Praised for Confronting Nashville Shooter
The man who wrested the gun away from the suspect in Nashville's Waffle House shooting says he had entered the restaurant just two minutes ahead of the gunman. James Shaw Jr. says he had gone to eat early Sunday after visiting a nightclub. He then heard gunshots, but initially though they were stacks of plates that had fallen over. Shaw says it was then that he saw restaurant workers scatter and a body near the front door as the gunman burst through the entrance. "He shot through that door; I'm pretty sure he grazed my arm. At that time I made up my mind ... that he was going to have to work to kill me. When the gun jammed or whatever happened, I hit him with the swivel door," Shaw told a news conference Sunday. The gun then jammed up, and Shaw managed to get one hand on the g...

Why French Globalist Macron is Befriending Nationalist Trump
PARIS (AP) — Of everything Emmanuel Macron has accomplished in nearly a year as France's president, the most important may be his tough-love friendship with Donald Trump. From their first bone-squeezing handshake to Macron's recent claim that he persuaded Trump to bomb Syria, it's been an improbable relationship. And it will be on pomp-filled display starting Monday as Macron goes on a state visit to Washington, the first by any leader since Trump took office. Macron calls Trump all the time. With other world leaders too wary or weak to woo the impulsive U.S. president, Macron calculates that it's smarter and safer to talk to Trump than isolate him. The 40-year-old moderate progressive, who had never held elected office before he won France's presidential ...

US, Jordan Troops Practice Response To Hazardous Materials
ZARQA, Jordan (AP) — U.S. and Jordanian forces in protective suits have practiced how to handle chemical, biological and nuclear materials. In Sunday's scenario, the materials were detected in a simulated smuggling incident. Mobile laboratory teams surveyed the area, collected samples and then went through decontamination. The drill was part of the annual 12-day "Eager Lion" military exercise involving more than 7,000 troops, including 3,500 U.S. service members. It was held near the Jordanian town of Zarqa, east of the capital, Amman. Jordan is a close U.S. ally in the region. Eager Lion began a week ago, just a day after the U.S., France and Britain launched missiles at Syrian military targets in response to an alleged chemical weapons attack near Damascus earlier this mon...

Road to N. Korea's Denuclearization is Littered With Failure
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Bill Clinton offered oil and reactors. George W. Bush mixed threats and aid. Barack Obama stopped trying after a rocket launch. While Seoul and Washington welcomed Pyongyang's declaration on Saturday to suspend further intercontinental ballistic missile tests and shut down its nuclear test site, the past is littered with failure. A decades-long cycle of crises, stalemates and broken promises gave North Korea the room to build up a legitimate arsenal that now includes purported thermonuclear warheads and developmental ICBMs. The North's latest announcement stopped well short of suggesting it has any intention of giving that up. South Korean President Moon Jae-in meets with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un on Friday to kick off a new round of high-...
