JERSEY CITY, NJ (VINnews) — The shooting attack which occurred in Jersey City Tuesday has resulted in 6 deaths, including the death of one police officer and both gunmen involved in the attack.

The police officer has been identified as Detective Joseph Seals  a married father of five who was known for getting guns off of the street, according to a press statement by Jersey Police Chief Michael Kelly.

Officers were called to the scene of an active shooter situation on Tuesday afternoon at 1:45 p.m.

A Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives Tweet reporting an active shooter alerted the media to the existence of the shooter.

The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office later confirmed that an officer had been shot and killed during the shootout along with five other civilians. Two other officers, Ray Sanchez and Feranello Fernandez, and one civilian are being treated for injuries involving shrapnel.

The two suspects, a currently unidentified pair of men, were shot and killed during the firefight, according to CBS News. The two were allegedly wanted in a previous homicide and Officer Seals confronted them. The crime scene subsequently stretched across three different locations.

The suspects fled into the Jersey City Kosher Supermarket in a stolen U-Haul van, where a firefight ensued and three more civilians were killed, as well as the two suspects.
