Brooklyn, NY - Hours after the FDNY found itself subjected to a barrage of criticism for assigning a firefighter who proudly proclaimed his anti-Semitic views to a firehouse on the outskirts of Borough Park, the department has changed course, electing to send the individual in question to another location, according to NYS Assemblyman Dov Hikind.

As previously reported on VIN News (http://bit.ly/2HmknlC), 28 year old Joseph Cassano graduated from the FDNY’s Fire Academy last week and had been placed at Engine Company 247 on 60th Street between 13th and New Utrecht avenues.

The son of former FDNY commissioner Salvatore Cassano, Joseph Cassano had already found himself in the media spotlight in 2011 for multiple racially charged tweets including one that read “I like jews about as much as hitler #toofar? NOPE.”  Cassano was a member of the FDNY’s Emergency Medical Services when the scandal broke and he resigned his position with the department, rejoining EMS again before snagging a coveted spot at the Fire Academy in December.

It’s not clear to which station Cassano reassigned to.

Expressing his outrage at the assignment, Hikind, whose district includes Engine Company 247, scheduled a Thursday morning protest rally to include elderly Holocaust survivors outside the firehouse.

Hikind said that he applauded the FDNY’s decision and noted the importance of speaking up in the face of injustice.

“When people stand up, voice their feelings and don’t just let things go by, you get results, especially when, morally, you are in the right,” Hikind told VIN News.

The FDNY did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the matter.
