Jerusalem, Israel - Feb. 19, 2018 - On the dais in the Waldorf-Astoria Jerusalem ballroom for a Monday evening event of the Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations (CoP) were five former Israeli Ambassadors.

Moderator Ambassador Ron Prosor served as Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations and as Director-General of Israel's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The four former Israeli Ambassadors to the US to discuss Israel - US relations were Moshe Arens, Sallai Meridor, Iamar Rabinovish, and Zalman Shoval.

Amb. Arens who served during the Reagan years, mentioned James Baker as the most difficult US official he had to deal with, Baker would not meet Arens in person.

To please President Bill Clinton and Warren Christopher, Amb Rabinovitch flew to Israel to personally deliver a message. There was no message in return from Prime Minister Rabin, the Americans were not happy.

Twice Amb. Shoval served in Washington, as for a third time, he quipped, "My wife is going to leave me." According to Rabinovitch, Larry Summers, former Vice President of Development Economics and Chief Economist of the World Bank and senior U.S. Treasury Department official throughout President Clinton's administration, was heard saying, Jews in high US government "all started with the State of Israel."

After decades of high level experience in the US, and with Israel and regional diplomatic experience, the former Ambassadors think things seem very much "the same."   However, according to Arens, it is a "fact, US and Israel terms are better then ever been before."

Former Ambassador Michael Oren was originally scheduled to attend, but was not on the dais for the CoP Issues Forum.

Tuesday morning CoP will have Inspector General Roni Alsheikh, Israeli Police Commissioner as first speaker. Another Issues Forum, on Iran will be held in afternoon.
