Baltimore, MD - Dec. 6, 2023 - (WBAL) Residents in south Baltimore have taken action against recent carjackings and auto thefts by installing license plate readers on certain streets. Three community associations collaborated to acquire these devices, aiming to assist law enforcement in addressing the issue. The license plate readers are strategically placed at key intersections in the south Baltimore peninsula and were funded by a $250,000 grant from the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development. While these cameras may not prevent car thefts, they are expected to alert the Baltimore Police Department when a stolen vehicle enters their vicinity, allowing for proactive response to the issue. The hope is that this initiative will deter criminals and improve neighborhood safety, potentially serving as a model for other areas of the city.
