The decision comes as a watchdog called the country's entry ban one of the most 'extreme' in the world

Israel will soon reopen its main international airport in order to repatriate Israeli citizens ahead of parliamentary elections slated to be held on March 23.

Only Israeli nationals will be allowed to travel into the country as restrictions aiming to keep coronavirus variants from entering Israel will still be in place for foreign travelers.    

"We are preparing for the return of Israeli citizens in the run-up to the elections, to this end our airspace will be open exclusively to Israelis," Transport Minister Miri Regev said on Sunday.

Regev also said that a special committee responsible for issuing entry permits to Israel will be canceled as soon as a decision to reopen the airspace is approved by the government.

"We will organize the necessary preparations so that hundreds of screening tests can be carried out at Ben-Gurion airport," she said, adding that "antigen tests will also be available onboard the planes." Read more at i24
