Houthi rebels in Yemen on Sunday claimed responsibility for an attack targeting neighboring Saudi Arabia and threatened the country with further assaults. 

Saudi Arabia is at the head of a military coalition that supports the Yemeni government in its war against the Iranian-backed Houthi rebel group that it has waged since 2014. 

"The operation was carried out with a ballistic missile and 15 drones... targeting sensitive areas in the enemy's capital of Riyadh," said Houthi spokesman Yahya al-Saree, according to the rebels' Al-Masirah TV channel.

Loud explosions shook Riyadh on Saturday as a Saudi-led military coalition said it thwarted a missile attack launched by Yemen's Houthi rebels, which sent debris raining down on civilian homes.

The Saudi air defense forces thwarted "a ballistic missile attack carried out by the Houthis" against the Saudi capital Riyadh, the military coalition said, quoted by Al-Ekhbariya broadcaster.

Saree on Sunday claimed those attacks as well, warning residents in the region to "stay clear from all military airports and sites." Read more at i24
