CEO of Baltimore City Public Schools, Sonja Santelises spoke with C4 and Bryan Nehman on handling students and teachers regarding in-person learning and coronavirus vaccinations.

“I think there is a need to make sure that  we are communicating, providing those assurances that it’s safe to go back,” said Santelises, who also said she has been in contact with individual teachers who have reached out.

Teachers have been included in earlier vaccination phases, but some students, parents and teachers have said they think more is needed.

“For a large numbers of our students, the distance learning is not working for them,” said Santelises. “There are numerous families that want that option. We’re not forcing that family back in, but what we’re seeing are really increases from everything to failing grades, to chronic absenteeism.”

Santelises addresses the struggles with teachers’ unions and having teachers return to in-person learning, while also acknowledging there is “some kind of reasonable fears that people have in a pandemic.” Read more at WBAL
