Baltimore, MD - May 31, 2020 - Today we were informed of the petira (death) of Rabbi Dr. Norman Lamm who lead my alma mater Yeshiva University for many years including my years in Rabbinical School. Dr. Lamm was a scholar of both Jewish and secular knowledge, and a gentleman, exceptionally sensitive to others. He served a pulpit "out of town- pringfield, MA", as well as one of the most prestigious congregations in America, the Jewish Center on the Upper West Side of Manhattan before becoming President, Rosh Yeshiva, and eventually Chancellor of the The University and the Rabbinical School.

Every potential Rabbi had to have a personal meeting and a one-on-one test of our learning, among other topics with him in his office. Later my Rabbinical Class all went to Dr. Lamm's  (and his wife who only passed away a month ago) home in Manhattan for a pep talk before setting out from Yeshiva.

Out of my entire class only a handful were going into rabbinical work, (pulpit, chaplaincy, or teaching) most were going into computers. Dr. Lamm gave a stern talk to all those not working in the rabbinate that I will never forget (and too long to write now) on how they needed to relate to their classmates going into rabbinical work or as he always referred to it as Avodat HaKodesh, Holy Work.

I cherish the personal notes that he sent me on each of my combat deployments and his constant willingness to be a guide, mentor, and role model to generations of modern Orthodox Rabbis that will have impact for many, many years.

May his soul be elevated to Heaven and be an advocate for us all.

He will be missed.
