Baltimore, MD - Apr. 1, 2020 - Hatzalah continues to receive calls for people with symptoms of COVID-19. We remind you that generally people with COVID-19 do not need to go to the hospital and they can call their healthcare provider for instructions and remain at home.  Hatzalah CANNOT test for nor diagnose COVID-19. Hatzalah should NOT be utilized for a “ride” to the hospital.

As cases within our community increase, our ability to respond becomes increasingly scarce.  PLEASE only call Hatzalah for life threatening emergencies.  In the case of COVID-19, life threatening emergencies include:

  • Trouble breathing
  • Persistent pain or pressure in the chest
  • New confusion or inability to arouse
  • Bluish lips or face

We have added additional dispatch screening questions to protect our responders from unnecessary exposure and our responders are taking additional precautions on all calls.  This means that even though an ambulance or provider is in front of your house, it may take up to 5 minutes to don protective gear. Please understand that we are getting to you as soon as possible and please do not approach us as we don our equipment.  Once we are protected, we may ask you to come outside of your house where we can assess you in a fresh air environment.

When going to the hospital and when being transported to the Hospital, remember that visitors will generally not be allowed inside the ambulance nor hospital. Therefore, we recommend that you bring your cellphone and charger so that you can communicate with family members.  The hospital staff is overwhelmed and are not able to communicate with family members.

Additionally, we strongly ask our community to adhere to the many requests that you have seen and heard regarding social distancing and travel.  Remember that the only way to prevent spread is by following these restrictions. The Hatzalah responders want to go home healthy, their families want them coming home healthy and it is not fair for the community to put them in harms way.

Hatzalah remains here for you and we hope that no one needs our services.
