A Call from the Vaad Roshei Yeshiva of Torah Umesorah

A need for focus during this critical time

הוי כי גדול היום ההוא מאין כמוהו!

ועת צרה היא ליעקב וממנה יושע!

The Hand of HKB”H has spread a pandemic across the world. We witness its fury as it has felled thousands around the globe, Hashem yerachem. We all need great rachamim. Beyond the actual frightful scourge of infection and disease, the ensuing turmoil itself has upended all normal life; to a great extent it is shutting down regular life-function and global economy. We, the Torah community, stand back in awe and wonder:

מה זאת עשה אלוקים לנו?

Yet, it is specifically our community that has been hit doubly hard! It is not merely the very real medical crisis, nor the subsequent disastrous societal and fiscal disorder that has sacked us; our ruchnius lifeline has been trounced! Our shuls, our batei medrash, our yeshivos and our schools are closing! The framework of our Torah society has been rendered unrecognizable. And we are left stunned! Even our familiar simcha get-togethers are disrupted; regular social contact, severed! And we are left aghast!

Firstly, we must know that we are a People of Faith; a People of Emunah! And we must strengthen that emunah. Each of us must demonstrate that faith to others; we must fortify the emunah of our own individual families. We must live with the recognition that every step we take, every encounter that confronts us, is nothing but the Hand of Hashgachah Elyonah. Nobody so much as pricks a finger if not dictated from Above!

We are directed even in the face of impending peril to maintain our total dependency on HKB”H and to be secure in that faith. Let us not for a moment regard what transpires around us as happenstance! We know that when our hearts are secure in that expectation, indeed HKB”H does not for a moment relinquish from us His special Hasgacha Pratis.

We are being called at this historic moment to turn to HKB”H; to call out in tefilla from the very depths of our souls. We need to turn our hearts Upward! Each of us needs to rouse our own deepest feelings; we need to stir the hearts of our families and children; we need now to grow in our connection to tefilla. We must recognize that we now beseech HKB”H for our very lives, for the nefesh of Klal Yisrael! We specifically call too on the women of our Torah communities; stalwarts of tefilla, set time each day to daven with earnest, daven with your children, your sons and your daughters; pour out your hearts, in a tearful plea that HKB”H should quickly shower His rachamim on all of Klal Yisrael.

Still, HKB”H demands more of us. He seeks our teshuva. Surely we know that it is His Hand that drives all that befalls us, but we must too consider that it is our hand that has brought this dreadful reality upon us! If our familiar standards of Torah and Tefilla have been disrupted we must contemplate that perhaps we’ve been lax in our own regard and respect for these treasured gifts. The Shechinah Hakedosha itself calls out to the world: אל תגעו במשיחי, ובנביאי אל תרעוChazal teach us that Hashem Himself warns, “Don’t even touch My Tinokos shel bais rabban. Do no harm to My talmidei chachomim!” And, somehow we witness today that those very cherished ones are disturbed and disordered.

Consequently, we must demand of ourselves: “How did this befall us, if not the consequence of our own actions?” We must intensify our confidence in the supremacy of the Torah Ha’kedosha, our essence and our lifeblood. When we will fortify our belief that indeed we have nothing but our tinokos shel bais rabban and our talmidei chachomim, they will be returned to us in their full glory. When we will bolster our reverence for kedushas bais haknesses and kedushas bais hamedrash, in His great mercy HKB”H will fully restore them to us. However, we must commit to fully safeguarding their exalted status, not sullying them with idle chatter and not violating their boundaries with foreign intrusion.

Finally, we must know that if social distancing is now being imposed upon us it is because we are being called upon to enhance our ahavas reyim. We must be ever-diligent in our initiatives of Shemiras Halashon, and more-than-usually cautious in anything that might bring division between us. We must increase our gemilas chassodim and our tzedaka until HKB”H will have mercy upon us very quickly,

אמן כן יהי רצון!
