Her campaign manager says Maya Rockeymoore Cummings is “healthy and recovering,” after undergoing a double mastectomy Friday.

On Tuesday, the widow of Congressman Elijah Cummings, and former Maryland Democratic Party Chairman, entered the special election race for her late husband’s seat.

On Friday, she went ahead with the preventative operation because she has a family history of breast cancer.

“Maya is grateful for the tremendous outpouring of prayers and support from friends, family and supporters throughout the week,” said Tucker Cavanaugh, Cummings’ campaign manager.

His statement thanks the doctors at Johns Hopkins who are treating Cummings.

“We are so glad that Maya is healthy and recovering and she’s looking forward to getting back on the campaign trail in a few weeks,” Cavanaugh added.

When she kicked off her campaign on Tuesday, Cummings said she would use her recovery time to raise money for her campaign.

The filing deadline for the February 4 special primary is Wednesday,

As of Friday night,  12 Democrats and four Republicans who have filed with the Maryland State Board of Elections  to be on the ballot.

The field is expected to increase.

WBAL NewsRadio has learned that Baltimore and Howard County Delegate Terri Hill told those attending an event at Wilde Lake Middle School in  Columbia Saturday that she will enter the Democratic race.

Hill, a physician, is in her second term in the House of Delegates.

With Hill entering the race, there are at least three Democratic members of the Maryland General Assembly running in the special election.

Baltimore City Delegate and House Majority Whip Talmadge Branch filed his paperwork to get on the ballot on Friday.

Baltimore City State Senator Jill Carter, who has formed an exploratory committee is expected to enter the race before the Wednesday deadline.

On Monday, Congressman Elijah Cummings’ predecessor in the House of Representatives, former NAACP President Kweisi Mfume will submit his paperwork to get on the ballot.  Mfume kicked off his campaign last month.

Another Democrat who had already filed is Harry Spikes, a former aide to Congressman Cummings.

A fifth Republican is expected to file her paperwork ahead of the deadline.

She is Kimberly Klacik, the Republican committeewoman from Baltimore County, whose online videos from a Baltimore City neighborhood in Cummings' district led to President Trump's Twitter attack of Cummings and Baltimore in July.

The filing deadline is 5 p.m. Wednesday. The Special Primary election is Feb. 4. The Special General Election is April 28, the day of the 2020 Primary

Election. Candidates on the ballot will be seeking a full two-year term for the 7th District seat, which includes parts of Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Howard County.

According to the latest voter registration figures from the state, Democrats outnumber Republicans by a 4-to-1 ratio.
