U.S. authorities are considering a ban on China's TP-Link Technology Co over potential national security concerns after its home internet routers were linked to cyberattacks, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday, citing people familiar with the matter.
In August two U.S. lawmakers urged the Biden administration to probe the Chinese router-manufacturer and its affiliates over fears their Wi-Fi routers could be used in cyber attacks against the U.S., according to a letter seen by Reuters.
The Commerce, Defense and Justice departments have opened separate probes into the company, with authorities targeting a ban on the sale of TP-Link routers in the U.S. as early as next year, the report said.
An office of the Commerce Department has even subpoenaed the co...
The Federal Reserve reduced interest rates by a quarter percentage point Wednesday and scaled back the number of cuts it expects to make next year.
In a split vote, the central bank voted to reduce its benchmark interest rate by 25 basis points to a new range of 4.25%-4.5%, initiating its third consecutive rate cut of 2024 despite signs that inflation isn’t entirely going away.
Newly appointed Cleveland Fed president Beth Hammack objected, preferring not to cut rates. Her dissent marked the second against a policy decision since the Fed started its latest rate-cutting cycle in September.
The consensus among Fed officials is for two rate cuts next year, down from four previously forecast in September.
Ten officials estimated 2 cuts next year, three saw two cuts next year, three sa...

An incendiary device was thrown at the Beth Tikvah synagogue in Montreal early Wednesday morning, leading Canadian authorities to suspect an antisemitic hate crime. Firefighters responded to the scene at 3 a.m. to extinguish the flames, which shattered the synagogue’s window and door. Witnesses reported seeing at least one individual near the site before the fire began. Beth Tikvah, located near Montreal’s Jewish Federation building, also houses a school, making it a central hub for the local Jewish community.
Rabbi Saul Emanuel, executive director of the Montreal Jewish Community Council, expressed outrage over the attack, noting it is the second in just over a year. He emphasized the need for enhanced security measures at Jewish institutions and called on law enforcement to ...
Baltimore, MD - Dec. 18, 2024 - A judge approved former Baltimore State's Attorney Marilyn Mosby's request to travel to Texas in December during her house arrest, according to court documents.
According to a court order, Mosby asked a judge for permission to travel to Levelland, Texas for employment purposes between December 15 and December 18.
Mosby said she needs to tour a facility that her company is considering acquiring and attend local meetings as part of the effort, according to the order.
In May, Mosby was sentenced to three years of probation and a year of house arrest for perjury and mortgage fraud.
She was found guilty in November 2023 of lying about business losses to make penalty-free withdrawals from her retirement account. She alle...
Washington, D.C. - Dec. 18, 2024 - The Supreme Court on Wednesday said it will take up a challenge to a new law that could lead to a ban on TikTok in the U.S, setting up a showdown over access to a widely popular app used by tens of millions of Americans.
Arguments will be heard by the high court on Jan. 10, an expedited timeline that allows for the court to consider the issue before the law takes effect on Jan. 19.
The Supreme Court said in a brief order that the Justice Department and lawyers for TikTok, as well as a group of users who separately challenged the law, should be prepared to argue whether the ban passed by Congress violates the First Amendment.
TikTok and its parent company, ByteDance, asked the high court earlier this week to temporarily bl...
Baltimore, MD – Dec. 18, 2024 – A small fire broke out early this morning at the Pearlstone Retreat Center, a hub for Jewish retreats and environmental education. Thanks to swift action by emergency crews and the building’s sprinkler system, the damage was minimal.
Eve Wachhaus, COO of Pearlstone, provided an update from the scene, stating that the retreat center is in far better condition than initially feared. While sprinklers were activated in a few spaces and some water damage occurred, the main rooms, including the kitchen, remain intact. The fire originated from a propane heater placed too close to an exterior wall, causing minor damage to the exterior and a meeting space above it.
The main building is currently closed for remediation, and electricity restoration ...
Baltimore, MD - Dec. 18, 2024 - The Social Security full retirement age (FRA) is set to increase in 2025, affecting Maryland residents born in 1960 or later. Currently, individuals can claim reduced benefits starting at age 62, but to receive full benefits, they must wait until the FRA. For those born in 1960 or later, the FRA will rise to 67 in 2025.
This change means that Maryland residents turning 62 in 2025 can still begin receiving Social Security benefits; however, these benefits will be reduced to account for the longer period over which they will be received. To obtain full benefits without reduction, individuals will need to wait until age 67.
It's important for Maryland residents to consider this adjustment in their retirement planning. Delaying benefits until reaching the...

Baltimore, MD - December 18, 2024 – A new congressional spending bill aimed at preventing a government shutdown includes provisions for 100% federal funding to rebuild Baltimore's Francis Scott Key Bridge. The legislation, which extends government funding through March 14, 2025, allocates over $100 billion in disaster relief, encompassing the Key Bridge project.
Maryland's congressional delegation has been advocating for full federal support for the bridge's reconstruction following its collapse earlier this year. Senator Chris Van Hollen emphasized the importance of this funding, stating that the federal government's commitment is crucial for the project's timely completion.
The inclusion of the Key Bridge funding in the stopgap measure refle...
Baltimore, MD - Dec. 18, 2024 - The Baltimore Citizen Review Board (CRB), responsible for reviewing police misconduct complaints, is set to dissolve in 2025, prompting concerns over police accountability. Mayor Brandon Scott assured the public that a more robust oversight entity with expanded powers and resources will replace the CRB.
The decision aligns with statewide legislative changes to enhance police accountability. While some community leaders worry about a potential oversight gap, others view it as an opportunity for stronger reforms. The Mayor’s office committed to public involvement in shaping the new framework, with additional details to be released soon.
