The Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations, Gilad Erdan, was temporarily held by U.N. police after he displayed a photo while Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi was speaking at the assembly, according to JNS. Erdan showcased a picture of Mahsa Amini, a 22-year-old Iranian who was jailed for not adhering to hair covering regulations and was subsequently killed in custody, sparking protests in Iran. Erdan criticized the U.N. for providing a platform to Raisi, whom he labeled a "mass murderer." While Erdan reported being detained, a spokesman for the U.N. Secretary-General maintained that he was not detained "in any way, shape or form." During his speech, Raisi emphasized Islamic values, condemned Islamophobia, criticized Israel, and insisted that Iran is pursuing "peaceful nuclear energy." He also accused the U.S. of violating the 2015 nuclear agreement.
