Jerusalem, Israel - May 23, 2019 - President Reuven Rivlin hosted a 24th session of the Bible Study Group of 929 on Tuesday, 16 Iyar. The beginning of Sefer Shoftim, was the subject, “In those days, there was no king in Israel.”

Rabbi Benny Lau began 929, an initiative to daily study a chapter of Tenakh. In its second cycle, 929 has grown, with a website of new material daily, with a long list of writers, including rabbis and scholars, and with international study groups. After the first cycle in 929 days was completed, an English cycle has been included as well as Hebrew, in this second cycle.

The President was the first speaker, "togetherness, craving for the king develops late in the period of the judges, stems not only from the desire for someone to make decisions, take responsibility for us, but also in the hope that someone will be good for us."

At the end of his remarks the president compared the challenge faced by people building the State of Israel and Israeli society today, with the days of the Shoftim. "We are not the generation of the desert, we are the generation that built the nation."

For each of these 929 sessions hosted at Beit Hanasi, different speakers and guests have been invited to attend and present. Gal Gabai of 929, journalist Amotz Asa-El, and poet Amichai Hasson, were among the speakers on Shoftim. Hasson mentioned the absence of Nechama Rivlin, who presented him with an award last year at Beit Hanasi, for his winning book of poetry. Since receiving a lung transplant on March 11, 2019, she has been hospitalized and not at the Presidential residence.
