Serving as a vibrant hub of the Baltimore Jewish Community, Beth Tfiloh has a rich offering of religious services, classes and year-round Jewish programming for children, families, young adults and seniors.
Beth Tfiloh Congregation is the largest Modern Orthodox synagogue in America, with more than 1,300 households representing a wide range of religious observance. The dynamic rabbis and world-class chazzan lead inspiring religious services, officiate at life cycle events and provide ongoing adult education classes through Mercaz Dahan Center for Jewish Life and Learning. An extensive calendar of youth and family programs are offered through the Youth Center.
Beth Tfiloh’s camp is one of the area’s most popular summer day camps, with a top-rated aquatics program on its own 40-acre campsite.
Centrally located in Baltimore County, the Congregation’s extensive religious facilities and banquet halls are among the most popular Kosher catering venues in the Baltimore metropolitan area.
Beth Tfiloh Congregation is connected to Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School, a Jewish, co-educational college preparatory school; its purpose is to educate Jewish students from preschool through high school. The student body is diverse, including families with varying religious, economic, cultural, and social backgrounds. Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School has been and continues to be unique in philosophy and curriculum, stressing the values and traditions of the rich Judaic heritage and American democratic ideals, while preparing students to meet local and global challenges of contemporary society.
Beth Tfiloh Congregation has an annual operating budget of approximately $6M, an institutional annual fundraising campaign of $2M, and is currently governed by two lay leadership governing boards, Officers of the Congregation and Officers of the Board of Directors. Beth Tfiloh Congregation has a staff of 20 including a Clergy Team of Rabbis and a Cantor, a Ritual Director, Director of Programming, Beth Tfiloh Camp Director, and an Administrative team.

Position
Beth Tfiloh seeks an experienced, collaborative, and mission-driven leader to serve as its Director of Shul Operations (DSO). The DSO will help achieve the congregational vision: Deepening Lives, Inspiring Purpose, Together. The DSO will serve as a sacred partner with the clergy, educators, and lay leadership. The DSO will be a thoughtful and full participant in the building and executing the long-term strategy while holding overall responsibility for running the shul. Beth Tfiloh is looking for leadership and oversight of staff in programming, customer service, engagement, and administration. The DSO will report to the Senior Rabbi.
Priorities:
• Strategic partner and customer service manager
• Be the point person that members, the board, and staff can go to for all Congregation related issues/questions/concerns
• Oversees collaboration and creates a synergetic approach between the shul and the school; brings people together to make decisions
• Negotiates the shared services, the allocation of time and resources
• Understands and implements talent development/human resources
• Drives cultural shift around empowerment, culture of growth, and accountability

Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
• Partner with the Senior Rabbi to create and identify strategic goals and metrics that align the shul in areas for mission driven growth, opportunity and sustainability.
• Continually assess the congregation’s needs and recommend priorities and necessary changes to strengthen the organization accordingly.
• Be involved to manage every aspect of the shul’s operations.
• Treat all members of the congregation and staff with respect, warmth, empathy and kindness.
Administration
• Understand how to manage and oversee the daily operations of the shul while working within a complex, multi-faceted bigger organization.
• Hire all office and other personnel falling under the DSO’s line of supervision and ensure HR policies, procedures and payroll are adhered to for all shul employees (including setting or assisting in establishing measurable goals for employees, and periodic evaluations)
Shared Services Collaboration
• The DSO will work closely with the Shared Services for the Congregation and the School. Shared services are Institutional Advancement, Facilities and Technology, Finance, and Marketing/Communications.
• Consistently prioritize to support the needs of the shul for these services in working to elevate the programming and service for the congregants.
Membership
• Put Customer Service first; Support recruitment and retention of shul members.
• Analyze membership data and trends and report regularly to Senior Rabbi.
• Work with the Senior Rabbi and rest of the team to create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, inclusion and engagement, nurturing relationships with current members as well as prospective inquiries.
• Support members' needs in financial aspects of membership, including special arrangements relating to annual commitments.
Lay Leadership Development
• Work with the Presidents and Executive Committees to ensure the Board is properly supported with information and data as needed.
• Serve as shul staff liaison to Board committees as agreed upon with the Presidents.
Programming and Religious Services
• Be present and available during the shul’s programming and services.
• Supervise and provide support and partnership for all administrative/logistical aspects of programming and services, in coordination with clergy and staff.
• Supervise and work with the staff to ensure all of the programming throughout the shul is meaningful and mission-driven as well as logistically sound.


Qualifications and Experiences
• Comfort and skill in thinking strategically while leading at the ground level, with the ability to set, pursue, and meet priorities; strong business operations know-how.
• Passion and commitment to Jewish values, rituals, customs, holiday practices, and a caring community.
• Proven senior management experience in a shul, membership organization, nonprofit, or similar settings.
• Strong people management skills, with the ability to build cohesive teams, delegate effectively, and “manage up.” Strong human resources/personnel experience preferred.
• Grace and professionalism in working with and facilitating collaboration across a wide range of stakeholders including Boards, volunteers, clergy, staff, and congregants.
• Effective communications skills with the ability to convey information clearly and inspire trust.
• Creativity in solving problems and seizing opportunities.
• Knowledge of donor and congregational database programs and/or customer relationship management systems.
• Unquestioned ethics and integrity.
