“Vayachalom v’hinei sulam mutzav artzah v’rosho magiah hashmaymah” - “And he (Yaakov) dreamed, and behold there was a ladder standing on the ground with it’s head reaching the heavens.”

This week the world lost one of its most famous people, a person that fought in wars, served as senator, and even reached the heavens. John Glenn, who accomplished a lot in his life and was certainly virtues in his contribution and inspiration to mankind, was “Magiah hashamaymah,” he reached the heavens, being the first person to orbit the earth.

Yaakov Avinu however, was never an astronaut and never went to space, but was also “magiah hashamymah” going far beyond where John went - all while staying right here on this earth. Yaakov was a “Sulam mutzav artzah” - grounded on planet earth, but “rosho magiah hashamaymah” - through his avodas Hashem he was able to reach lofty heights that nobody could even imagine. The heights that Yaakov reached were all the way to Kisai Hakavod, as the passuk attests “V’hinei malachei elokim olim v’yordim bo,” “And behold the angels of G-d were ascending and descending on it.” How did Yaakov Avinu reach such lofty heights? Surely through serving Hashem on a level that only the Avos were able to achieve. But one thing is for sure, Yaakov understood that life is a ladder to be climbed. Through all the trials that Yaakov endured he remained steadfast in his emunah and never wavered even in the most troubling of times. Yaakov Avinu, step by step, climbed the spiritual ladder of life.

Even when Man went as far as the Moon and declared “One small step for man, one great leap for mankind,” that great leap was not even one step on the ladder of life. It is through mesirus nefesh and commitment to the Torah and Mitzvos that we are able to get on the ladder and begin climbing. Through remaining devoted to this journey through heaven Hashem will assist us in reaching personal heights and satisfaction in life, far greater than traveling through space.
