Baltimore, MD - Apr. 27, 2024 - (WBAL) Amid growing legal concerns over artificial intelligence (AI), following an incident at Pikesville High School where AI was allegedly misused to implicate the principal, Maryland leaders are prioritizing the regulation of AI technology. State’s Attorney Scott Shellenberger is leading investigative efforts to address legal gaps related to AI, emphasizing the need to stay ahead of potential misuse. Senator Shelly Hettleman plans to introduce legislation to hold individuals accountable for AI misuse, aiming to prevent harmful consequences like those experienced by the principal. Lawmakers are exploring drafting legislation to address various AI-related scenarios, such as elder abuse, white-collar crime, and election fraud. Governor Wes Moore established a sub-cabinet to develop AI strategy and policy but is not currently addressing the criminal aspect of the technology. Local and national experts will be consulted to inform legislative efforts, with Shellenberger expressing confidence in drafting a bill for consideration during the next legislative session.
