Baltimore, MD - Feb, 2014 - Last week, Beth Tfiloh Dahan Community School’s seventh grade embarked on a tour of Jewish Baltimore. The students met with representatives from the Star-K, the Chesed Fund Ltd., Hatzalah of Baltimore, Ahavas Yisroel and Ner Israel, then enjoyed a tasty lunch at Eden Café.

Two students, Hailey G. and Joseph L. , shared their thoughts about their experiences

Hailey G. :

Beth Tfiloh’s Jewish Baltimore field trip was rich with learning, bonding, and recognizing Jewish values all throughout Baltimore.  I really enjoyed learning about Hatzalah because it was very inspiring to hear about people who dedicate their lives to others. I also absorbed a great deal of kosher knowledge from the Star-K, in addition to what I have learned in Mishnah class this year.

What really had a major impact on me personally were the two stops to Frank Storch’s house and to Ahavas Yisroel’s food pantry.  Not only did it remind me that there are many kind Jewish organizations, but I also got to meet the people in charge and see that they have wonderful hearts.  These leaders really inspired me to try to do many mitzvot and realize that anyone can make a difference no matter how strong or weak they are.

A highlight of the trip was going to the Eden Café for lunch, because let’s face it, what seventh grader doesn’t love lunch? Lastly, we went to Ner Israel.  In my opinion, this stop was more of a focus for the boys because it’s a men’s yeshiva. The girls still got to have a nice time because they toured the campus and got to meet with ladies that live on campus.  Overall, the day was a blast and hopefully this article has helped pass on the knowledge that I learned.

Joseph L. :

I never really realized the amount of work that has to be done to become kosher certified until I visited the Star-K. Not only do you need to know what the ingredients are, but you also need to know where they come from.

While there are plenty of good Samaritans in the world, Frank Storch and the volunteers at The Chesed Fund Ltd. are true tzadikim. The Chesed Fund isn’t just a gemach service; it is also a group of people that are willing to spend time and take care of the Baltimore Jewish community. It doesn’t matter if it’s getting you to a doctor’s appointment or giving the local ambulance service another vehicle, the Chesed Fund is always there to lend a helping hand. There are so many good men and women who want to lend a helping hand in a medical emergency, but being on-call 24/7 surely says something a little bit more. When Beth Tfiloh visited Hatzalah, we got to see what goes on when these Jewish men and women get a call. What these people do to help the Jewish community is amazing!

Lunch at Eden Café was delicious! It gave us all a nice chance to relax and chat with friends and get ready for the afternoon. Afterwards, we stopped at Ahavas Yisrael. I know that there are food banks in Baltimore and soup kitchens throughout the city and county, but, is a family able to go to a soup kitchen for a nice Friday night meal? That’s where Ahavas Yisroel comes in. Ahavas Yisrael gives around 70 Jewish families in Baltimore a nice Shabbos meal each week that they would not be able to afford otherwise. They are a group of volunteers who pack boxes with food every Wednesday night and then deliver them on Thursday night. These people take the mitzvah of tzedakah to a whole new level.

Everyone has a relationship with G-d, but the men at Ner Israel take that relationship and become even closer to Hashem. The amount of learning and studying at Ner Israel is stupendous!
