Baltimore, MD - Feb. 23 - For the past several years, Beth Tfiloh's 7th Graders have been fortunate to take a trip portraying Baltimore Jewish Life. The purpose of the trip is to give the students a feeling of community pride and enable them to relate to facets of Jewish life in Baltimore which they may not have known existed. Some years, the trip focuses more on Jewish Baltimore from past to present, and some years it focuses on the wonderful organizations which Baltimore is lucky to have. This year, the trip highlighted many of the organizations that do a large amount of chessed for the community, as well as Ner Israel and the Star-K. We are deeply grateful for each of the organizations for taking the time to present and host us.

STAR-K. The Star-K greeted us with a warm welcome.  Nice gestures as simple as the sign on your board, to the snack bags that all the children received, were well received. The kids learned lots of content relating to the rules of Kashrut and gained an appreciation of the many details that are involved in the process of certifying food.  Rabbi Baruch Beyer was able to relay deep concepts over to the kids in a relatable way. For instance, Rabbi Beyer equated eating kosher to "fueling an expensive car with quality gas."  Rabbi Beyer had the kids' attention from beginning to end. Everyone gained from his presentation, students and teachers alike.

FRANK STORCH -The Chesed Fund, Limited

To meet a real doer like Frank Storch, was a real experience for the kids. Every kid sensed his genuine love that he has for other fellow Jews. We heard Mr. Storch share many personal stories and encounters of how he helped others in our community and afar. He imparted to the kids, how they can begin helping others and that we should begin to think of "out of the box" ways to help others around us. We met a real philanthropist that cares for the individual and the klal. An experience to remember.

HATZALAH

Where do I begin? Mr.Steven Goloskov shared what Hatzalah does and how it feels a need in our community. He shared statistics of response time and frequency of calls. He shared what is behind their operations and how people can get involved as volunteers. Mr. Goloskov showed us a moving and powerful video of how Hatzalah saves lives. The video showed us, from the responders point of view, what the day to day life of a Hatzalah responder looks like. Mr. Goloskov related to the kids quickly and answered many questions.  We even toured a Hatzalah ambulance and saw some expensive life saving devices.  This entire experience made it so real for the kids to see and understand the value of this incredible organization.

AHAVAS YISRAEL

I can't thank Mr. Jeff Coleman enough for volunteering his time year after year, and coming out to meet with our 7th graders. He explained what Ahavas Yisrael does and how it discreetly helps so many families. We saw the Ahavas Yisrael warehouse and saw the boxes that were in the early stages of prep. We began to learn and understand how they help and what they do.  Jeff Coleman shared real life stories of families and how Ahavas Yisrael stepped in peoples' lives to help. We learned about their budget and some the businesses that aid with food sponsorships week after week.

NER ISRAEL

Unbelievable!  We were amazed of the size of the campus and the size of the yeshiva. We were astounded to see so many people learning and actively involved in the life of Torah learning. We met with the Rosh HaYeshiva (Head of the Yeshiva), Rabbi Aharon Feldman, shlita, and he graced us with a words of insight and brachah.

We davened mincha with the main yeshiva in a room filled with well over 300 men.

We then met Rav Sheftel Neuberger who shared with us why people choose to learn, and explained what "yeshiva life" is like going over their daily schedule and routine. He answered so many of our inquisitive minds and entertained our questions. It was a true privilege to meet such great Torah personalities

[Ed. Note: In an upcoming article - complete with photo essay and videos - two students, Hailey G. and Joseph L., will share their thoughts about their experiences from this exhilarating day.]
