The world continues to reel in the aftershock of the tragedy in Meron which claimed the lives of 45 people, including some children. For each story of horror and gore, however, there seems to also be a story of heroism. Unity and generosity took place not only on the night of the tragedy, but in the days that have passed as well.

The number of Americans filing for unemployment benefits for the first time fell to a new pandemic low last week, the latest evidence that layoffs are slowing as the economic rebound strengthens.
Figures released Thursday by the Labor Department show that applications for the week ended May 1 fell to 498,000 from a revised 590,000 a week earlier.
While the number of unemployed workers applying for benefits is down sharply from the peak of almost 7 million that was reached when stay-at-home orders were first issued a year ago, it's still more than double the typical pre-crisis level.
Most economists expect the downward trend to continue in coming months as more Americans are vaccinated and venture out to travel, shop and eat.

It appears there will now be a meeting between Gov. Larry Hogan and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott to focus on violence in the city.
After an exchange of tweets on Tuesday and finger-pointing over violent crime in Baltimore, Hogan says he is willing to have Scott and Police Commissioner Michael Harrison come to Annapolis for a sit-down meeting about the issue.
“We’ve called on the mayor and police commissioner to come down to Annapolis as fast as possible. We want to hear about what type of crime plan they have,” Hogan said Wednesday. “Last time I met with the police commissioner they had a plan that we didn’t like and gave them a lot of suggestions on, which they didn’t listen to.”

Baltimore, MD - May 5, 2021 - BSSP joins our neighbors to condemn and mourn the murder of Ephraim Gordon that occurred in the early morning hours on Monday on Fords Lane.These acts of violence have become all too common in Baltimore City and defy human dignity and decency. We will speak loudly and stand together against this horrific crime.BSSP has been engaged in assisting the family and law enforcement immediately following this crime and continues to work to bring the perpetrators of this murder to justice. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has banned most evictions across the country since September. United States District Court Judge Michael A. Shipp has ruled that Jackson Township’s ordinances banning schools and eruvim is both unconstitutional and discriminatory against Orthodox Jews, and has imposed a preliminary injunction putting those ordinances on hold.
Judge Shipp made the ruling in the Agudath Israel lawsuit against Jackson, which alleges that officials, including Mayor Mike Reina and former Council President Rob Nixon, discriminated against Orthodox Jews by passing ordinances to keep them out of the township, including those banning schools and eruvim.

New program offers convenient, walk-up testing opportunities for underserved communities
Baltimore, MD – The Maryland Department of Health (MDH) today launched a free mobile COVID-19 testing program to enhance testing engagement and access in underserved communities statewide. The program comprises two mobile testing teams that will visit each of Maryland’s 24 jurisdictions over the next 12 weeks.
“As we continue to vaccinate more Marylanders, we are also racing against the spread of more contagious COVID variants,” said MDH Secretary Dennis R. Schrader. “Testing, along with contact tracing, are parallel efforts that remain critical to our ability to identify and respond to COVID-19 outbreaks and will enable us to end the pandemic.”
