1. Good morning and Chodesh Tov.  Today and tomorrow we celebrate the new month of Iyar. It is customary to say that the word Iyar is an abbreviation: alef for Ani - I am; double yud for HaShem; reish for Rofecha — your Healer.  This month is considered the month of healing for both body and soul. Our commentators explain that the nation of Israel went out from Egyptian slavery in the month of Nissan and went through a process of healing and renewal during the following month of Iyar.2. The name Iyar was brought back from Babylonia where it meant “light.”3...

A Georgia appeals court on Wednesday agreed to review a lower court ruling allowing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis to continue to prosecute the election interference case she brought against former President Donald Trump. Trump and some other defendants in the case had tried to get Willis and her office removed from the case, saying her romantic relationship with special prosecutor Nathan Wade created a conflict of interest. Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee in March found that no conflict of interest existed that should force Willis off the case, but he granted a request from Trump and the other defendants to seek an appeal of his ruling from the Georgia Court of Appeals. That intermediate appeals court agreed on Wednesday to take up the case. Once it rules, the losing side...

It was a memory that tickled at the very edges of my imagination, as if it had wafted in on a warm breeze.  It was oh, so familiar. At the same time, it belonged to a stranger. Someone from a different time. A more innocent time.  The memory was beckoning to me, but I couldn’t hear its message. The only sentence fragment which I could decipher was: “When I was a young boy in Binghamton…” —— You’ve probably heard of Binghamton, New York. You probably know that there’s a university there. Maybe you drove by it, driving on Route 17 from New York to Toronto.  You may even know college students who have attended the school. Lately, it’s made some news, as the Student Association passed a BDS resolution. To be fair to ...
The Biden administration recently paused an arms shipment to Israel due to concerns the country could launch a full-scale assault on Rafah, a city in southern Gaza — a move the U.S. has strongly opposed. The shipment would have included roughly 1,800 2,000-pound bombs and 1,700 500-pound bombs, a senior administration official told The Associated Press Tuesday. More than a million civilians have sheltered in Rafah after being forced to evacuate other areas in Gaza due to the ongoing war between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas. The U.S. has voiced concerns over the Israeli military using the larger explosives in the dense and urban area. Israeli officials scrambled over the reason behind the pause, according to Axios, which first reported t...
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2024  -  The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration will continue its $39.8 million work to rehabilitate 10 bridges at the I-95/I-695 (Baltimore Beltway) interchange in the Arbutus area of Baltimore County. On Wednesday, there will be a single-lane closure on southbound I-95 at 7 p.m., a double lane closure at 9 p.m. and a triple lane closure at midnight. The three lanes will be closed until 5 a.m. Thursday. The overnight triple-lane closure and ramp closure will allow crews to shift the traffic pattern in the work zone to prepare for the next phase of work. Drivers should expect major overnight delays on the southwest I-695 interchange with I-95 in Arbutus. Overnight ramp and lane closures are scheduled as follows. During ...
Baltimore, MD - May 8, 2024  - The Key Bridge Response Unified Command is scheduled to use precision cuts made with small charges to remove a large section of the Francis Scott Key Bridge wreckage from on top of the M/V DALI. The exact time of the precision cuts will depend on multiple environmental and operational factors. The small charges, a standard controlled demolition tool, will split the large section of truss at specific locations to create multiple, smaller sections, which allows salvors to use cranes and barges already on scene to remove these sections of the bridge and ultimately remove the M/V DALI from the channel. “We remain focused on restoring the Marine Transportation System, while ensuring the protection of the public and the environment,&rdqu...

Background and a DansDeals special investigationCourtesy of Dan's Deals On Sunday, I read about an incident on American flight 4447 on the DansDeals Forums that seemed too strange to be true. A veteran poster alleged that his brother was kicked off of an American Airlines flight from Cleveland due to being visibly Jewish. People often send me stories to write about and I’ve reported on many over the years, though I don’t cover the majority of them. However, this one seemed like it was worth investigating. Over the past 2 days I’ve spoken with 2 passengers who were removed from the flight, Reuven (Reuvi) Scheinerman and Yehudah Roffman. Reuvi is a minor, so I also spoke with Reuvi’s father Motti. Were you on AA flight 4447 on 5/5? Please email ...

US President Joe Biden delivered the keynote address today (Tuesday) at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum’s annual Days of Remembrance ceremony at the US Capitol. "This ancient hatred of Jews didn't begin with the Holocaust and didn't end with the Holocaust either, or even after our victory in World War II. This hatred continues to lie deep in the heart of so many people in the world and requires our continued vigilance," Biden said. "That hatred was brought to life on October 7th in 2023. On a sacred Jewish holiday, the terrorist group Hamas unleashed the deadliest day on the Jewish people since the Holocaust, driven by an ancient desire to wipe the Jewish people off the face of the earth," he said. "Over 1,200 innocent people, babies, parents, grandparents, slaughtered ...

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres demanded that Israel end its military operation in Rafah, less than a day after the IDF launched an operation to destroy the final four Hamas battalions in Gaza. "I am disturbed & distressed by the renewed military activity in Rafah by the Israeli Defence Forces," Guterres wrote on X today (Tuesday). "I urge the Government of Israel to stop any escalation, and engage constructively in the ongoing diplomatic talks." In a subsequent tweet, Guterres wrote, "I reiterate my appeal for Israel & Hamas to show political courage & spare no effort to secure an agreement now. To stop the bloodshed. To free the hostages. To help stabilize the region. This is a crucial opportunity that we cannot afford to miss." Guterres has been criticiz...
