There have been a number of attacks involving stray dogs in Beit Shemesh of late, leading city officials to issue a directive to shoot the strays. Some officials would be armed with rifles and patrol the streets from 3:00AM to 7:00AM in the hope of finding and shooting the strays.

After announcing the new policy on Facebook, Beit Shemesh City Hall came under fire, with some expressing outrage over the decision to shoot the strays.

The city’s posting added the shooting of the dogs is approved under law, and the act would be carried out by trained veterinary sharpshooters.

Officials in the Agriculture Ministry are quoted telling Yisrael Hayom it agrees with the decision, citing at times; the matter of strays attacking persons is a real issue and it must be addressed.
