President Reuven Rivlin today (Thursday) visited Israeli police and security personnel in Jerusalem's Old City. President Rivlin was accompanied by Jerusalem District Police Commander Moshe Edry. As the President arrived at the Western Wall plaza he received a security briefing and then met with 150 Border Police officers stationed in the city.

The President spoke to the Border Police forces and said, "We've just finished celebrating the holidays; we had our holidays and the Muslims had their holidays. We were able to celebrate them because you have enabled us all to do so."

The President emphasized that Israel is committed to maintaining the freedom of religion and worship, and said, "We will not permit a situation to occur in Israel in which a person believes that they cannot keep their faith. We believe in the freedom of religion and we provide the Muslims with the freedom to worship on the Temple Mount. You have the duty and right to protect all the citizens of Israel. I want to thank you for your work around the clock, night and day. I'm not a soldier or a policeman so I cannot salute you officially, but I thank you and salute on behalf of the people of Israel. "

The President then went on to meet with the soldiers from the elite Duvdevan Unit at their base, accompanied by the commander of the Judea and Samaria Division Brigadier General Lior Carmeli, and the commander of the Duvdevan Unit. The President told them, "I want to thank you for your hard and complex work during the holiday season, far from home, but close to our hearts."
