A van has plowed into a crowd of people in Barcelona’s busy tourist area, police said.

The incident took place in the early evening on Thursday at the city’s iconic Ramblas area, which is full of shops and restaurants.

Police said several people had been injured.

Video posted to social media showed emergency services at the scene. Some images show injured people in front of “Maccabi“, which is a Shomer Shabbos, Kosher restaurant.

Metro and train stations have been asked to closed, according to reports, and emergency services have warned people not to go to the Placa Catalunya in the heart of the city.

According to El Pais, “The road is now cordoned off and the downtown settlements have been evacuated… Police sources have explained that it is a white van that ran down several people, and after the driver fled on foot.” They add that the driver ran over people while they were attempting to cross the street during a traffic light.

La Rambla, sometimes pluralized as “Las Ramblas,” is a a street in central Barcelona, popular with both tourists and locals.
